For anything with a location attached, the three results in the map pack matter more than the ten blue links underneath them. They sit higher, they carry a phone number, and a large share of the people who see them never scroll past.
Local SEO is the work of getting into those three slots. It overlaps with ordinary search work but is decided by a different set of signals, and the most important one is a profile most businesses have not opened in two years.
How Google Decides the Map Pack
Three factors, stated openly: relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well you match the search. Distance is how near you are to the searcher. Prominence is how well known and well regarded you appear to be.
You cannot change distance. That is worth accepting early, because a great deal of frustration comes from expecting to rank across a whole city from one address. What you can change is relevance, which is largely your profile, and prominence, which is largely reviews and citations.
Your Business Profile Is the Product Page
Treat the Google Business Profile as a page you are optimising, not a directory entry you filled in once.
Categories Do More Than You Expect
The primary category is the single most influential field on the profile. Pick the most specific one that genuinely describes you, not the broadest. Then add secondary categories for real services you offer, and remove any that were aspirational.
Hours, Photos and Attributes
Accurate hours including holidays, because a wrong closure is both a ranking signal and a lost customer. Real photographs rather than stock, added regularly rather than once. Attributes filled in completely, since they feed the filters people use to narrow results.
Services and Products
These fields are underused and they are free text you control. List services in the words customers use, with a sentence each. It is one of the few places you can add relevant language to the profile directly.
Reviews, and What Actually Moves the Needle
Recency Beats Volume
Two hundred reviews with nothing in the last year reads as a business that peaked. A steady trickle of recent ones is stronger than a large historic total. Build asking into the moment work finishes, when goodwill is highest, rather than into a quarterly campaign.
Replying Is Part of the Signal
Reply to all of them, briefly, including the good ones. Replies are visible, they demonstrate an active business, and a measured response to a bad review persuades more readers than the review itself dissuades.
You cannot move your address, so spend the effort on the two things you can change: how specifically you describe yourself, and how recently someone vouched for you.
What to Fix on the Website Itself
One Page Per Location
If you serve several areas, each needs a real page with genuinely local content: the address, the team there, the services offered there, directions people would actually use. Duplicating one page with the city name swapped is transparent and it does not work.
Keep Name, Address and Phone Identical
The same formatting everywhere, on your site and on every directory. Suite 4 in one place and Ste. 4 in another is a small inconsistency that makes the entity harder to resolve confidently.
Local Content That Is Not Padding
Write things only a business in that area could write. Projects completed nearby, questions specific to local regulations, seasonal issues that affect your customers there. This is the part that separates local SEO from filling in a form.
Citations, Briefly
Get listed accurately on the major directories and the ones specific to your industry, then stop. Citations are a hygiene factor with a low ceiling. Chasing hundreds of them is the classic way to spend a local SEO budget on the least valuable available activity.
How to Measure It
Profile insights give you calls, direction requests and website clicks, and those are the numbers that map to revenue. Rankings vary by where the searcher is standing, so a single position is close to meaningless. Track the actions instead, and use a grid tool if you need to see how visibility falls off with distance.
The Takeaway
Local SEO rewards specificity and consistency more than effort. Most of the available gain sits in a profile that takes an afternoon to fix properly.
- Choose the most specific primary category that is still accurate.
- Fill in services, attributes and hours completely, then keep them current.
- Ask for reviews at the moment work finishes, and reply to every one.
- Give each location a real page, never a duplicate with the name changed.
- Measure calls and direction requests, not a single ranking position.
